HO|Berlin was operated between 2013 and 2016 as art and exhibition hall within walking distance to Alexanderplatz. It was created by redefining and reconstructing an outdated and unlettable supermarket from GDR-times.
Having suffered from decades of low maintance efforts and also vandalism the building was released from non-original extensions and the historic building volume was then covered by a white layer of paint. Through this decision the initial architectonical qualities of a light pavilion construction have become visible again.
In the former selling areas of approx 1.000 sqm an exhibition space with absolute flexibility in every aspect was offered. Furthermore, the world-wide unique Museum of Letters, which archives and exhibits letters from public displays, spread through further 1.000 sqm of ex-functional spaces of the market as permanent anchor tenant.
The very limited project budget for necessary investments into the building was earned back through the time of operation without any further contributions from third parties.
